Correction of facial lines and wrinkles with Botox or Dermal Filler injection has revolutionized the field of non-surgical cosmetic procedure. The choice of procedure depends solely on the nature of the lines. Botulinum Toxin Type A (BTA), popularly known as Botox or Dysport is used to treat facial lines and wrinkles that appear during facial expressions due to muscle contraction; while Dermal Filler (DF) is used to treat lines that appear when the face is resting, due to a breakdown of underlying collagen. It is common for the physician to suggest a combination of both Botox and Dermal Filler for correction of the lines.

Even though there are many biological changes a person experiences with aging, one of the foremost-recognized concerns in aging is the formation of facial lines, wrinkles, folds, loss of skin elasticity and increased skin laxity. There are two types of facial wrinkles – dynamic wrinkles and wrinkles that appear at rest.

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by contractions of underlying facial muscles, when you smile, laugh, or frown. Years of squinting and frowning tends to leave deep wrinkles in the skin between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose, across the forehead and at the corners of the eyes.

As we age, skin cells replace themselves at a slower rate, causing wrinkles to appear. Lines form due to loss of underlying elasticity and collagen and the skin on our face becomes thinner and less elastic causing wrinkles and permanent crease lines to appear. Crow’s feet form on the brow and around the eyes, while loose skin folds around the upper and lower eyelids creating a haggard look. Tiny wrinkles form around the lips and the tissue around the jaw and neck droops into jowls and double chins.
